Compressible Mhd Turbulence: Mode Coupling, Anisotropies and Scalings
نویسنده
چکیده
Compressible turbulence, especially the magnetized version of it, traditionally has a bad reputation with researchers. However, recent progress in theoretical understanding of incompressible MHD as well as that in computational capabilities enabled researchers to obtain scaling relations for compressible MHD turbulence. We discuss scalings of Alfven, fast, and slow modes in both magnetically dominated (low β) and gas pressure dominated (high β) plasmas. We also show that the new regime of MHD turbulence below viscous cutoff reported earlier for incompressible flows persists for compressible turbulence. Our recent results show that this leads to density fluctuations. New understanding of MHD turbulence is likely to influence many key astrophysical problems.

Compressible Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence: mode coupling, scaling relations, anisotropy, new regime and astrophysical implications
We present numerical simulations and explore scalings and anisotropy of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. Our study covers both gas pressure dominated (high β) and magnetically dominated (low β) plasmas at different Mach numbers. In addition, we present results for superAlfvenic turbulence and discuss in what way it is similar to the subAlfvenic turbulence. We describe a techni...

In this Letter, we report compressible mode effects on relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) turbulence in Poynting-dominated plasmas using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. We decomposed fluctuations in the turbulence into 3 MHD modes (fast, slow, and Alfvén) following the procedure mode decomposition in (Cho & Lazarian 2002), and analyzed their energy spectra and structure functions sepa...
متن کاملGeneration of Compressible Modes in MHD Turbulence
Astrophysical turbulence is magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) in its nature. We discuss fundamental properties of MHD turbulence. In particular, we discuss the generation of compressible MHD waves by Alfvenic turbulence and show that this process is inefficient. This allows us to study the evolution of different types of MHD perturbations separately. We describe how to separate MHD fluctuations into 3 ...

Turbulence is the most common state of astrophysical flows. In typical astrophysical fluids, turbulence is accompanied by strong magnetic fields, which has a large impact on the dynamics of the turbulent cascade. Recently, there has been a significant breakthrough on the theory of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. For the first time we have a scaling model that is supported by both observat...
